Valencia introduced me to a new drink – horchata. (Well, horchata in Castilian, Orxata in Catalan and something like ore-chatter to those of us grappling with either language.)
This creamy concoction reminded me of childhood roast chestnuts from London street stalls, even though horchata is served at ice-bucket temperatures to counteract the Valencian heat.
Blended from tigernuts, water and sugar, horchata refreshes in both its liquid and frozen forms. Some stalls even let you try tigernuts whole – shrivelled nuggets of chewy, smoky-nut taste.
Does anyone know whether you can find this outside Spain?

Hi, I'm Abi, a journalist who swapped a career as a doctor for a life on the road.

I can remember buying tiger nuts to chew on the way home from school in South Wales ( back in he 1950's )
In South Wales?! Who knew..
Hi Abigail, you might find bottled pasteurised Horchata (not as good and tasty as the natural original one) in few big hypermarkets in LatinAmerica … and sometimes in ¨spanish clubs¨ abroad (Casa de España).
Thanks Pablo – I’ll have to look out for it the next time I’m in Spain.
