Shark Conservation: Why Should We Save Jaws?

Mike Rutzen dives with Brad Pitt and occasionally with sharks, or perhaps that should be the other way around. Here, he talks to me about shark conservation in the shimmery, shadowy, unmistakably blue light of the Lost Chambers Aquarium in Dubai. Enough from me, over to him.

Shark conservation. What do you think about it?

We HAVE to save sharks. The world’s oceans are in enough trouble without losing sharks. Sharks are magnificent and wildly misunderstood creatures. Being near the top of the food chain they regulate the populations of other underwater species which if unbalanced would cause huge environmental problems. As opposed to their media portrayal as reckless killers, they are scavengers at heart and prefer the lazy meal of vulnerable creatures, such as those that are sick or injured. As a result they minimise the number of weak sea creatures that exist. They are attracted to the unusual movement in the water of creatures that cannot swim smoothly. I used to work as a shark photographer and can honestly say that it was the best job I ever had. I can also tell you that some sharks are fussy eaters. I have seen a caribbean reef shark spit out a dead rat for example!

I don’t suppose you’d be interested in an interview about your experiences as a shark photographer? Thanks, Abi

I agree with you, Liv- sharks need our protection more than ever. Would love to see some of your work as a shark photographer, where could I find it? :)
Thanks for bringing up the topic, Abi!
