Clearly there are guide books for fast facts and practicalities, and entire bookshops devoted to non-fiction travel writing.
However, I’ve always had a soft spot for a different kind of travel writing: the rest. Through either fiction or memoirs, if an author conjures up the place for me, gives me a sensation of what it is like to live somewhere, or provides some insight into the region’s history – well, I love it.
Here’s my round-up of book reviews, according to country. If you think that sorting them by title or author would be more helpful, then please let me know.
China - Wild Swans - Jung Chang
France – The Lollipop Shoes – Joanne Harris
