Croatia seems to become a very popular travel destination and we can understand why:)

Yes, Croatia’s definitely on the travel radar now. I first visited not too long after the war – and it felt as though I’d arrived too soon, everything was still a little too raw. It was fascinating to return on this trip and to see just how much Zagreb has changed in such a short time.

Love the pictures! Went through Zagreb and that entire area in 1986. Fell in love then with the people and beauty of the area. Looking forward to returning… Nice job!

Thank you! I imagine things were rather different then…Would love to hear about your impressions when you do return!

I really enjoyed these photos. That market (or what I assume was one) looks fun. I was in Zagreb for just a couple hours in 1997 on my way to the Croatian coast from Budapest. When I go back to that area, I want to spend some time there because I enjoy the smaller or less touristy cities of Eastern Europe.

Yes, it’s a market. Sorry, I should add captions. Zagreb’s a very interesting place – it’s not as small as its old centre implies and there’s certainly not many tourists there (in winter at least!)

Awww … these photos make me so happy. I love Zagreb and have been to those places you shot (and have my own photos from there). I love that you spent time in this city. I think it gets overlooked a lot since Croatia also has the sea and islands. Glad you are helping to show off its beauty!!

    • Abi January 24, 2012 at 8:29 pm #

Yes, you’re right. Most articles about Croatia focus on the coast – but Zagreb is definitely worth a visit (and I don’t say that about everywhere, that’s for sure…)

If there are many close ups, which showcase a city, I would guess that the city isn’t the most beautiful place to shoot photos… :) Just a guess! Your photos are very nice again… Also the close-ups!

    • Abi January 27, 2012 at 1:39 pm #

Or a photographer with a weakness for close-ups I suppose ;) No, Zagreb doesn’t have quite the same panoramic views as, say, Istanbul, Paris or London. The old town packs in a punchy atmosphere of new urban chic and remnants of medieval times but the streets are very narrow…Also, it’s not all that easy to differentiate between the buildings. I ended up passing through a security gate at what looked as though it was a museum but turned out to be a main government building. Neither I nor Zagreb come out of that particular story looking good ;)

Dear Abigail, Your photos of Zagreb are really great, but I have to say that Zagreb was never ever behind The Iron Curtain!! Let me explain: olthough communist (socialist) country, former Yugoslavia was not a part of Eastern Block ie the member of the Warsaw Pact. Please read for yourself the wiki article. You will see the former Yugoslavia on the map marked green, and countries behind the Iron Curtain marked red. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Curtain
This applies to Belgrade, Sarajevo, Skopje, Ljubljana and Podgorica – the capitals of ex Yugoslavia Republic. (Yugoslavia was a federation )

Hey – I know we discussed this on Google plus but for the benefit of other readers, I’m reposting the exchange here:

Hi Mali. Don’t worry – I’ve never claimed that Zagreb was behind the Iron Curtain. Check out this article of mine which touches on the subject…http://www.insidethetravellab.com/the-iron-curtain/

Thank you Abigail for your response, sorry I didn’t see that article. I am glad you’ve met the people who already helped to clear that issue. Just before I stumbled upon your blog, I was reading the rewiev of Skyfall movie, where the author claims Zagreb is behind the Iron Courtain in James Bond’s “From Russia with love” movie. Back than, the difference between Iron Courtain countries and Yugoslavia was so big, that such uneducated claims puzzle us, people here, especially when turists come arround with the wrong presumptions about our history.

No apology required. It seems that it’s a sensitive subject and it’s easy to see why. Thanks for reaching out!
