A Dazzling Concert Hall in LA

Gehry’s Concert Hall in LA

The dazzling (if incongruously named) Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, designed by Frank Gehry.

I first fell in love with Gehry’s work in Bilbao, as I watched a solitary scarlet jogger pass by the silver scales of the Museo Guggenheim. When I finally reached Los Angeles, in between checking out the infamous “Hollywood” sign, the Chinese Theatre and colliding with the police, the paps and Heidi Klum (more on that later), I asked my generous hosts for a lift downtown to check it out: the Frank Gehry Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Awkward name, stunning building. Enjoy the photos!

That’s a really beautiful architectural shot.

    Thanks. I think it’s an under-appreciated building…

I’ve been to Bilbao in June and to LA in September and I must say I was surprised at how much the Guggenheim and the Disney Concert Hall look alike. To be honest, I found it a bit disappointing. Gehry’s style is so special, but when I saw those two buildings, so much alike, in such a ‘short’ period of time, it made me go a bit like: “Oh, there’s more of them”.
    That doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re both true architectural must-sees thought:)

Yes, I can see what you mean! If we get to travel often, that’s often what ends up happening. I still love them both though (LA had a lot more sunshine, the metallic colours looked quite different to grey and rainy Bilbao.)

Guess I got lucky visiting the Guggenheim en plein soleil:)

Yeah, Frank Gehry is amazing! I recently posted a pic to my FB Page of one of his buildings in Vegas. When you were in L.A. did you visit the Getty Museum? Fantastic place!

No – I had such a brief time in LA. Next time, next time!

Have your say...
