What to Look For When Booking a Rental Car

Finding the best car rental can be a maze. I’ve driven hire cars through the snowy mountains of Austria, the camel and dust strewn back roads of Morocco, and along the gorgeous route from San Francisco and Santa Barbara – and more.

And here’s my current opinion on how to sift the car rental companies in order to find the right deal for you – without spending a week doing so.

Search for a cheap car rental and you’ll find dozens of platforms promising the lowest price. Yet the same vehicle (often from the same rental agencies) can appear at wildly different rental prices depending on where you look. And I have had some very bad experiences with unknown companies, too. DM me if you want that list!

That’s where a good car rental comparison site comes in. The right one helps you compare prices, filter out poor suppliers, and find the best deal without unpleasant surprises at the rental desk.

This guide looks at the best car rental comparison sites, how they work, and how to use them to find the cheapest car rental deals without compromising on reliability.

What Are Car Rental Comparison Sites?

A car rental comparison site is a platform that allows you to compare the best car rental options across multiple providers in one place.

There are two main approaches:

  • Comparison platforms (aggregators) – these pull listings from multiple car rental agencies
  • Direct booking sites – where you book with companies like Hertz, Avis or other top brands

Most modern travel sites sit somewhere in between. You use them to compare rental options and book your rental, but the contract itself is with the rental provider.

Some also include peer-to-peer services like Turo, which operate differently from traditional rental agencies.

The Best Car Rental Comparison Sites

EconomyBookings

If your goal is to find the cheapest car rental without trawling through dozens of travel sites, EconomyBookings is one of the strongest options.

It stands out for its ability to compare car rental prices across locations worldwide while highlighting the best deal based on both cost and supplier rating.

Why it works

  • It often finds the lowest price across multiple suppliers
  • Shows real user ratings for each rental agency
  • Makes it easier to compare rental options side by side

What to watch

  • Like all aggregators, you’ll need to check the rental conditions carefully
  • Insurance and deductible levels vary between suppliers

Best for

  • Travellers who want to find the lowest price quickly but still make an informed choice

Use sites like Skyscanner to help you compare prices

Skyscanner

Best known as a travel search engine for flights, Skyscanner also performs well as a site to book a cheap car rental.

It’s particularly good at helping you compare prices quickly, with filters for fuel policy, insurance, and supplier rating.

Why it works

  • Clean interface, easy to compare car rental deals
  • Strong filtering tools
  • Useful for combining flights and car hire

What to watch

  • Often redirects to third-party providers
  • Final car rental price can change slightly at checkout

Best for

  • Ease of use and quick comparisons

Kayak

Kayak takes a broader approach. Instead of just comparing rental agencies, it compares multiple comparison platforms as well.

This can help you find cheap car rental deals that don’t appear elsewhere.

Why it works

  • Searches across multiple booking platforms
  • Good for spotting price differences
  • Helpful for one-way rental and one-way car rental deals

What to watch

  • The booking process can feel fragmented
  • Not all listings clearly show full rental conditions upfront

Best for

  • Travellers who want to compare the best car rental options across the widest range of sources

Customer reviews are important when choosing which rental company to go with

Enjoy Travel

Enjoy Travel puts more emphasis on quality control and transparency than sheer volume.

Why it works

  • Strong focus on customer reviews
  • Clear breakdown of car rental insurance and inclusions
  • Good balance between cost and reliability

What to watch

  • May not always show the cheapest car rental deals
  • Smaller inventory than larger aggregators

Best for

  • Those who prefer a smoother experience over chasing the absolute lowest price

TravelSupermarket

TravelSupermarket is a familiar UK comparison site that covers a wide range of travel products, including online car rental.

Why it works

  • Trusted UK brand
  • Straightforward comparison tools
  • Useful for comparing car rental in the US and Europe

What to watch

  • Less global depth than some competitors
  • Interface is more functional than refined

Best for

  • UK travellers who want a simple, reliable comparison tool

Key Features to Look For Beyond the Car Rental Price

When comparing car rental platforms, focus on substance over marketing.

  • Transparent pricing
The best price isn’t always the lowest upfront number – look for full cost clarity
  • Free cancellation
Essential if your plans change or rental prices drop
  • Wide supplier network
More choice increases your chances of finding the right car
  • User reviews
Crucial for avoiding poor rental agencies
  • Clear filters
Especially for insurance, fuel policy, and one-way options

What to Watch Out For

Even the best car rental comparison sites have limitations.

Platform vs provider
The comparison site handles the booking, but the rental agencies control the experience.

Extra fees at the rental desk
Expect potential extra fees for:

  • Additional drivers
  • Young driver fees (for those below a certain age to rent a car)
  • Extra insurance or upgrades

Insurance confusion
Car rental insurance can be complex:

  • Basic cover often includes a high deductible or excess
  • Extra insurance may be offered at pick-up (as a broad rule of thumb, decline this)
  • Liability insurance levels vary

Deposits and payment
Most providers require a credit card for the security deposit, though some allow a debit card. Options for a car without a credit card are limited.

Terms and conditions matter
Always read the terms and conditions – especially around fuel, mileage, and drop-off rules.

How to Choose the Right Platform

The right site depends on what matters most to you.

  • To find cheap car rental quickly → EconomyBookings or Kayak
  • To compare the best car rental options easilySkyscanner
  • To prioritise reliability → Enjoy Travel

Also consider:

  • Destination – availability varies across locations worldwide
  • Trip type – road trips, one-way, or monthly car rental
  • Flexibility – free cancellation can make a big difference

My Experience Comparing Car Rental Sites

After years of comparing car rental platforms for everything from short city breaks to longer road trips, one thing stands out: the cheapest car isn’t always the best option.

Two listings may show the same vehicle – but one includes better rental conditions, clearer insurance, or a more reliable supplier.

The best approach is to compare prices across at least two platforms, check reviews, and take a moment to understand what’s actually included before you book your rental.

I still always look at comparison sites but I’d also highly recommend taking a look at the Hertz site directly, too. If things go wrong, they have a tried and tested way of dealing with things – that is not always the case with smaller companies. Plus, if you sign up for gold membership, which is free, you can skip the queue and pick up other perks.

Finally, there are a few more things to look out for:

  • Pick up location – check that airport pickup actually means the airport, not a difficult bus or taxi journey away
  • Child seats – I’ve lost count of the number of situations where one was booked but vanished at pick up. We now travel with our own.
  • Always factor in luggage when deciding what size car you need.
  • Always ask at the desk about tolls or unusual charges and double check the speed limit before driving off

Final Thoughts

There’s no single perfect site – but some make it much easier to find the best deal.

  • Best overall: EconomyBookings
  • Best for ease of use: Skyscanner
  • Best for broad comparison: Kayak

EconomyBookings consistently performs well because it balances price, transparency, and usability, helping you find the cheapest car rental deals without losing sight of quality.
